The seminar will explore the key aspects of Brisbane town life, its people and places, and policing in the years between the arrival of the first immigrant ships in the Moreton Bay settlement in the 1840s, to the establishment of Brisbane as a colonial capital in 1859, and finally the organisation of the Queensland Police Force five years later. Drawing on an array of primary source material – including recollections, newspaper reports, parliamentary records, police and court reports and official correspondence – the seminar will tell unique stories focusing on the town’s guardians of the peace, their life and service, and, of course, interactions with the populace in colonial Brisbane.
